Herongate Wood is a 25 acre green burial site at Herongate, just outside Brentwood, about a mile off the A127, just off Junction 29 of the M25. We have a Hall of Remembrance in which to hold services and provide the other necessary facilities. We have our own Chapel of Rest and will collect your loved one and keep them safe, while we arrange the funeral. In addition to full interments, we also offer exactly similar facilities for Cremation Funerals and ashes burial. The burial ground is conveniently situated on Billericay Road, insulated from it by two rows of mature trees, mainly oaks, now enjoying the full protection of Tree Preservation Orders. The existing tree cover is being extended by additional planting and you may be assured that the development of the Hall of Remembrance, Chapel of Rest and car parking and the access has been sensitively planned to sit comfortably within the landscape, causing no trees to be removed or damaged. Herongate Wood was voted 'Best New Green Burial Site in 2005' by the prestigious Institute of Cemetery and Cremation Management (ICCM) and was National runner-up in 2007. The entire site has a valley running down its length, providing gently rolling slopes and offering magnificent far-reaching views across farmland. The area selected for burials is adjacent to a neighbouring wood, carpeted each spring with bluebells. As burials proceed, Herongate Wood is being extended by planting young trees across the area where burials have taken place, encouraging the bluebells to spread. It is worth mentioning that we make no charge for the planting or maintenance of the burial ground as we regard the entire woodland as your memorial. There is a large natural pond that has been restored and re-planted to provide a wildlife habitat and also serve as an additional area of quiet contemplation for visitors to sit or stroll. Informal pathways will be mown into the grass. Native species of trees and shrubs have been planted in the area around the pond and seating provided so as to provide privacy for both visitors and birdlife. During the Summer months, many families have chosen to have their funeral service outside, using the pond as a backdrop. We have recently installed a paved terrace especially for these open-air funerals. A beautiful woodland landscape is being created over the burial area, which will be passed to The Woodland and Wildlife Trust Company Limited, where the fund built up from payments received from WWCC will ensure it will be preserved forever. No grave will ever be re-used or disturbed; those who lie there, will 'rest in peace' in the truest sense of the words.
