Fergus Wessel's Stone Workshop
Description
Based near Burford, Oxfordshire, Fergus's fine memorials can be seen throughout the UK including St Paul’s Cathedral.
Fergus creates hand carved gravestones, cremation memorials, commemorative plaques, opening plaques and heraldry in stone. (An early love of stone carving and an interest in lettering led him to the Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge, where he trained as an apprentice. Since 2003 he has had his own workshop where he has so enjoyed meeting people, working with them and understanding their needs.)
His work tends to be quite traditional and his conviction is that finely carved lettering and pleasing spacing are fundamental; simplicity is the key.
Whenever possible, he encourage clients to visit the workshop, although in some cases it is not practical, and it is always possible to work using correspondence by post and email. This sometimes means sending clients samples of stones, or photographs of the stone once it is drawn out. Visitors are welcome both on weekdays and weekends, and I am happy to discuss a project over the phone, or to answer any questions; unlike some large companies, the client will only ever have to speak with me, and this makes the process of commisioning a piece run very smoothly.
